Thunderbolt 3 ↔ Thunderbolt 2 adapters
Directionality, power, and the traps nobody documents
TL;DR¶
A Thunderbolt 3 ↔ Thunderbolt 2 adapter is not a passive cable. It is an active, directional bridge that never passes power. Buy it for the wrong direction and the device simply won’t enumerate.

Thunderbolt 3 ↔ Thunderbolt 2 adapters
Why direction matters¶
A Thunderbolt link is asymmetric by nature: one end is the host (the computer), the other end is the device/peripheral. An adapter is built to convert in one canonical direction: its “native” direction.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| TB3 → TB2/TB1 (native) | Host side is TB3 on USB-C, device side is TB2 or TB1 on mDP. The common case. |
| TB2/TB1 → TB3 (reverse) | Host side is TB2 or TB1 on mDP, device side is TB3/USB-C. Only works with a bidirectional adapter. |
Comparison¶
Only two vendors ever shipped an active Thunderbolt 3 ↔ Thunderbolt 2 adapter.
| Vendor | Model | Direction | Power passthrough | Audio[1] |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple | Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 | Bidirectional | ❌No | ✅Working |
| StarTech | TBT3TBTADAP | Unidirectional (TB3 → TB2/TB1 only) | ❌No | ✅Working |
Power¶
No adapter carries power. A TB device behind one must have its own power supply. Bus-powered TB devices will not work through the bridge.
